The conference “From the Classroom to the Community: Teaching and Advancing Social Justice” will attract more than 200 law professors, lawyers and social justice experts from around the world to discuss issues relating to legal education and social justice.

The two-day conference will kick off on Friday, September 30 with the plenary session “Addressing Racialized Violence: The Role of the Legal Academy.” The panel will feature Jasmine Gonzales Rose of Pitt Law School, Frank Rudy Cooper of Suffolk Law School, Vickie Casanova Willis of First Defense Legal Aid and David Patton of NYU Law School.

Joey Mogul, a partner at Chicago’s People’s Law Firm and the director of the Civil Rights Clinic at DePaul Law School will give Friday’s keynote address about her role in successfully litigating the Chicago police torture cases.

On Saturday, Vincent Warren, the executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, will give a keynote.

The conference also will include more than 40 panels on topics ranging from diversity in the classroom to social impact advocacy to incorporating social justice in legal writing.

Two additional programs for anyone interested in legal academia or improving their teaching also will be offered. On Wednesday, September 28, SALT offered “Breaking in and Staying in Legal Academia.” The program is for anyone considering a position in law school teaching or administration. Students, practicing lawyers, current teachers and anyone considering a career in law schools are welcome.

On Thursday, September 29, LatCrit and SALT will hold their Tenth Annual Junior Faculty Development Workshop. The workshop is designed for critical, progressive and social justice oriented pre-tenure professors (including clinicians and legal writing professors), as well as those who may be contemplating a law teaching career.

John Marshall Professor Kim Chanbonpin is a member of the Board of Governors of SALT, while John Marshall Associate Professor Hugh Mundy is a nominee for the Board.
